it wasn't supposed to happen that way

although i really don't know how it could have turned out. i mean, i should have taken the hint from all those horror movies, but no.
we were hanging out on the bridge because it was a nice night for once, and i hadn't hung out with Craig in weeks. his parents are really weird. they grounded him for getting C's, but then encourage him to have a social life... well, at church--
"get to the point"
oh! so, we're hanging out, and Megan's just staring into the water. she's kinda freaking me out already, but then she says "the black current is strong tonite. i think it's time".
"uhhh, what?" said Nick, who was looking into the water too.
"this is the night. the black current shall take us all and spit us up on shore unharmed."
"yeah, guys, i think Megan's broke."
Craig and I moved over to the edge, and Megan's expression seemed to twist in the faint light from the one streetlight down the road. She had been clutching a small black book, and with one quick glance down it, turned to us and said, "who wants to jump first?"
I didn't believe for a second anything that she was saying, but it was one of those nights were we all just said 'fuck it' and thought dying wouldn't really be the worst thing. She told us that her book contained some crazy powerful magic. Most of it was over her head, but she had figured out how to bring things back to life. Once again, this would have been the part of the movie where the cheerleader is walking right into the damn dark alley even though everyone in the theater is yelling "you dumb cow! go back!"...
Nick decided to go first. "Alright, man, make it quick".
"what the fuck?!" i yelled back as he handed me the hunting knife he always kept on him.
"who did you think was gonna do it? Meg's gotta do the ritual, and Craig.. well."
"hey..." moped Craig.
"okay", i said, "i'll do it. if this doesn't work..."
"it will work. the current is strong tonite." Megan was really freaking me out at this point.
I took a deep breath, pulled back, and plunged the blade in and up. Nick had shown me hundreds of times. If you really want to take someone out, aim for the liver. So i did. The shock hit him immediately, and i watched the color drain from his face as he slumped to the ground. I dropped the knife as the sirens approached. then we were all standing over his casket, his mom screaming through her tears at me as i insisted it was all just an accident. it was just an accident.
Megan moved quickly over to the body and thumbed through her book until she found a satisfactory page. She started humming and rolling her head around as she mouthed words from the book. Then her voice echoed out into the night as the bridge was flooded by this strange green light. I saw her body shake uncontrollably before collapsing, and as the light faded Nick's limp body convulsed and resembled a fish out of water for a second as air filled his lungs.
We all stood in silence for a minute, just watching him breathe. There was blood everywhere, but it didn't look like there was any more pouring out from the wound.
After a while, he regained his composure and an evil grin stretched his gray face. "That was awesome. Who's next?"
"no way no way no WAY!" i screamed at lump of dead tissue that used to be my friend. "we did it, it worked, fuck it. NO WAY."
"Jason, you have to try it, man," Nick persisted, "you can feel everything melt away, then the whole world puts itself back together. it only hurts for a minute."
"i'll go," mumbled Craig.
"hell no! i'm done with this," and i started to walk away.
"you can't escape the black current anymore than we can, Jason," the voice was Megan's but the face was not.
"i want to," said Craig, "it's all i've been thinking about lately."
Nick picked up the knife, wiping his blood from it with his torn shirt. "Same way?"
"i've always wanted to drown..."
"yeah, but if we can't find your body"
"no," the sick puppet that should have been Megan oozed out, "it will work. the current connects us all now."
"fuck this," i said as i decided to wash my hands of the whole event. without any hesitation, i felt Nick pull my arm behind my back and felt the razor-sharp knife against my neck. His shirt was wet and i could feel the blood soaking through to my back.
"Jason, think about it for a second," said Nick, "if i kill you, we'll just bring you back. there's no reason to fight it."
Craig stood on top of the bridge, and handing his glasses to Megan, tiptoed to the edge. "We're not perfect. We're never going to be," and he jumped. The water swallowed him whole with a splash and he disappeared into the night.
We waited for an eternity as i fast-forwarded to the part where they are strapping me down and readying the needles as i insist it was all an accident. Just a horrible mess of a night. Finally, Megan opened her book again, this time placing Craig's glasses on the page as she began the same epileptic head rolling and humming. Then, her voice dropped and the green light that had engulfed us all before formed into a tight ball and arced out into the sky like lightning. Megan again collapsed onto the ground and Nick loosened his grip on me. I pushed him down and ran, but was too panicked to see the car. The driver laid on his horn and swerved to miss me, running straight into Nick and Megan and skidding down the edge of the bridge before grinding to a halt. I ran as fast as I could past the streetlight and into the darkness of the black current.
